"At least I know now how not to impress you." // I Came to Game

April 10, 2011

"My private tragedy, which cannot, and indeed should not, be anybody's concern, is that I had to abandon my natural idiom, my untrammeled, rich, and infinitely docile Russian tongue for a second-rate brand of English, devoid of any of those apparatuses—the baffling mirror, the black velvet backdrop, the implied associations and traditions—which the native illusionist, frac-tails flying, can magically use to transcend the heritage in his own way." (Vladimir Nabokov, "On a Book Entitled Lolita," Lolita, 316–317)

Comments:
but did he haaave to translate PUSHKIN into his second rate English? i loves me the Russian lit translations, but if he knows he's a bit clumsy with the English bits, why think he could possibly do Onegin justice? i can't help it. i'm concerned. well not really. how are you? where are you? guess what! i got As Tears Go By, Happy Together, Days of Being Wild, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels and 2046 (lost my 1st copy) all in one go for a present recently! thought of you... excited for the Grandmasters? hiiiiii-ya!

Strangely (or not so strangely), I wondered about you a few months ago. A cursory (very cursory) search for you revealed nothing, so I assumed that, like so many people I lost touch with, you died in a grease fire in the late 2000s.

I am excited for The Grandmasters. I am a bit sad because I left New York, where all I did was watch movies (send me your e-mail address and I will send you the manifesto of the Movie Klub that I started there, which is now thirty members strong and has been going on for more than two years), but then I sold out and live in Philadelphia, where I watch almost no movies.

I don't have regular Internet access yet and am hardly at a computer even when I do; that said, we should correspond more, n'est-ce pas?
